LORAN
LORAN- This stands for Long Range Navigation, and is a network of radio waves in different areas of the world that shows accurate position plotting. Loran transmitting stations around the world constantly produce 100 kHz radio signals. Certain shipboard Loran receivers receive and interpret these signals, then provide readings which correspond to a grid overprinted on nautical charts. By comparing and contrasting signals from 2 different stations, the mariner uses the grid to determine the exact location of the vessel.
